Functional Aging Summit

June 16–17, 2017

Caribe Royale Orlando

A Message from Dan Ritchie, PhD, and Cody Sipe, PhD:

Dear Success-Minded Fitness Professional,

If you are serious about growing your business or launching an exciting career in the fitness industry with clientele that has the spending power, discretionary income, and the critical need for your services, then this event could be a career changer for you.

The fitness industry has been ignoring the biggest opportunity just sitting at its door – baby boomers and aging adults who control the economy, desire to stay young, and want to work with a personal trainer who specializes in their needs.

The aging population is a flourishing fitness business opportunity for fitness pros who want to stay on the cutting edge of our industry.

The Baby Boomer Generation controls 70% of the wealth, yet the fitness industry hasn't figured out how to train them (properly), how to reach them, or how to make them lifelong clients.

When attending the Functional Aging Summit, not only will you learn the latest science and research, but you’ll hear from fellow trainers and experts across the country as to what is working on the ground right now in their studios and practices. Dan and Cody have amassed a lineup of experts you won't see at your typical fitness event or conference.

Meet your co-hosts and founders of the Functional Aging Institute: Cody Sipe, PhD and Dan Ritchie, PhD

We aren't just PhDs! We have trained over 2,500 mature clients and have created the most comprehensive fitness certification for training mature adults. We now have certified Functional Aging Specialists in 16 countries! We aren't just academics, researchers or creators of another certification program --- we are successful business owners, our studio Miracles Fitness just had its 10 year anniversary. When the fitness industry events, associations and publications need expert speakers or writers on training or marketing to boomers and aging adults --- we are who they are looking to for the latest information.

Rebranding Aging™ - Growing Bolder

We have all been brainwashed about aging. Everything from media reports to flawed research studies, mandatory retirement ages, doctors prescribing unnecessary medicines, over the hill jokes, Hollywood portrayals, Madison Avenue commercials and more have all negatively affected the way we age. We’ve been brainwashed by our families, our friends and even ourselves. The truth about what’s possible is mind-blowing and presents a huge and growing opportunity for individuals and companies in the fitness business. Sharing stories and video clips of ordinary people living extraordinary lives, Marc Middleton reveals the keys to active longevity. More importantly, he shares the secrets of connecting with and motivating the huge 50+ demographic to get off the couch and get into life.

Marc Middleton is founder and CEO of Growing Bolder, one of the leading voices in the active lifestyle movement, and a multiple Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and journalist, documentary filmmaker, magazine publisher, adventurer and world-class Masters athlete. He is the co-host of the Growing Bolder® TV and radio shows, executive producer of Surviving & Thriving TV, editor of Growing Bolder® Magazine, author of Rock Stars of Aging®, and director, videographer and writer of the feature-length documentary film Conquering Kilimanjaro.

Marc became one of the media industry’s very first bloggers, filing daily online blogs from the 2000 Sydney Olympics for a network of broadcast affiliates. He was one of the first to recognize the power and influence of the rapidly growing 50 + audience and the coming cultural shift that would change everything we thought about the possibilities of life after 50. Determined to position himself at the intersection of emerging technologies and the impending age wave, Marc walked away from a news anchor job in 2006 to launch the multi-platform Growing Bolder network. Since then, Growing Bolder has built one of the world’s largest libraries of active-lifestyle container, producing shows for all platforms and custom branded networks for the retirement and healthcare industries.

Insider Training Secrets: Where Evidence Meets Practice

In this fast-paced TED style presentation three older adult exercise experts will share some of their top training strategies to help you get better results with your clients. We have hand selected veteran trainers, each with decades of experience, to address some of the top pressing issues many trainers face dealing with older clients. If you are following the Functional Aging Training model then we know you are already getting great results with your clients but we can always learn how to be more effective. Pull out your pen and get ready to furiously take notes because these sessions will be jam-packed with great tips and strategies that you can use with your clients right away. Each speaker will have 20 minutes followed by a 15 min audience Q&A at the end.

Session 1: Reactive Balance Training Tips and Techniques

Recent research suggests that the most effective way to train balance is reactive postural control which most closely mimics a trip, slip or bump that leads to a fall. Yet most balance training exercises use planned postural control strategies. Learn how to safely and effectively incorporate reactive techniques into your training programs.

Session 2: Rocking and Rolling! Getting clients on the floor for myofascial release

Self-myofascial release can be great for older clients yet using foam rollers can be difficult for them to use and can take up valuable time teaching them proper technique. The solution? Get them on the hard floor rolling around. This session will share some great techniques and strategies on how to use the floor for myofascial release with the added benefit of stimulating the vestibular system.

Session 3: F.L.E.E.: Functional Living Exercises for Everyone

Trainers will learn practical strategies to train diverse groups of clients safely, effectivel, and efficiently.

Are we inadvertently being Ageist?

We tend to view older adults from two extremes – we see them as extremely debilitated with significant physical limitations or we view them as robust individuals without limits. Unfortunately, applying either of those mindsets to the wrong person at the wrong time can substantially limit the person’s potential. A systematic approach to the client can you minimize your bias. Functional Movement Screening creates perspective and allows you to quickly target the needs of the person standing in front of you. In this session, you will learn how to apply the Functional Movement Screen to the older adult in a meaningful way whether they are an elite triathlete or an inactive person with a complex medical history.

The Trajectory Sales System - How to Close 9/10 Mature Clients on Long-Term Memberships

Your marketing is working and you now have ten new consults with mature adults. How are you going to close the deal? It isn't going to be by focusing on six-pack abs and skinny jeans. And it isn't going to be by telling them that getting stronger will help them to get off the toilet independently either. To be ultra successful in closing mature clients on long-term memberships, you need to connect with them on a deeply emotional and practical level without focusing on the negative aspects of getting older. Learn how to use the innovative Trajectory Sales approach that consistently closes more than 9/10 clients on long-term memberships. You will find out how to determine their true "hot buttons" and how to best communicate the value of your program using a "whole-brain" approach and terminology that is important to them. Plus, discover what common "rules" of fitness sales that you absolutely have to break when selling to mature adults. This session will revolutionize your approach to selling fitness to older clients.

Ageless Grace Certification

Denise Medved - Wednesday–Thursday, June 14–15, 2017

Denise Medved

Ageless Grace® Brain Health Fitness Program is a cutting edge technique based on the stimulation of neuroplasticity, or the ability to change the form and function of the brain through physical activity. The program utilizes 21 tools or exercises to activate the five primary functions of the brain in a spontaneous and playful manner, similar to activities we learned as children which originally fired neurons and developed neural pathways. Each tool not only activates the functions of strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination and kinesthetic learning, they each focus on one primary physical skill to provide lifelong optimal function (i.e. balance, spinal mobility, flexibility, hip flexors, multi-skilling, upper body strength, etc.).

Losing brain function as we age is now the number one concern of adults all over the world and is an ideal certification to add to your resume for functional aging. The certification provides 14 hours of cognitive, intuitive and experiential training. Cost is $380 and includes the Ageless Grace® playbook, 3 DVD set and flashcards for personal practice and use with clients and students This certification is accredited for 1.2 ACE CECs.

Dr. Evan Osar - Thursday, June 15, 2017

Baby boomers and individuals 65 years of age and older are currently the largest growing segments of the population. As increasing numbers of these individuals advance and move into their senior years, a significant proportion will experience issues related to chronic low back tightness or discomfort, as well as spinal arthritis and spinal stenosis. These limitations are leading to increased numbers of individuals using experiencing decreased quality of life and increased use of OTC and prescription medications and orthopedic surgeries. However, by understanding and applying the principles of the Integrative Movement System™ into a corrective and progressive exercise program, the fitness professional can help their aging adult clients improve alignment and control of the trunk, spine, and core. Additionally, this information will allow the fitness professional to be instrumental in helping improve their client’s functional strength and stability as they work towards successfully achieving their health and fitness goals.
