Module 13 – Wrap Up

It is the mission of the Functional Aging institute to educate instructors to be proficient in multiple modalities of training for the mature market. This sector of participants is an exciting and rewarding group which is growing in numbers exponentially. The success of any mature market group exercise class will be seen by the planning of each class section, as well as the effective presentation of the various content. The information in these modules can be used in creative ways to formulate a fun, functional, and safe group exercise class. The only factor that limits the success of this class is the imagination. As discussed, this class can be taught as a single group class, a circuit class, a semi-circuit class, or any combination desired. Considerations for the format chosen could include: class size, skill level, diversity of skill levels, available equipment, available space, number of instructors, likes and dis-likes of the participants etc. The goal of this functional aging group exercise class is to teach functional movement skills and patterns that will improve overall function and independence.

This group setting is designed to create a synergistic environment with socialization, fun, and educational information that will transfer into activities of daily living. The consistent class schedule also lends itself to accountability, routine, and a purposeful approach. Participating in an appropriate group exercise class will challenge the student safely and effectively. This will help to instill self-efficacy, reduce fear and anxiety, as well as promote more activity outside of class. Research indicates that individuals have more fun exercising in a group setting, and stay interested longer due to the social atmosphere. Most individuals know that exercise is important as they age, but have no idea how to begin. This overwhelming task can impede the action phase of behavior change. Group exercise offers a simple alternative with a positive environment for socialization, with both physical and psychological benefits. Simply put – group exercise provides an opportunity to feel young again and be physically active with others.
